Matchday three in Group E brings us a fixture between two teams approaching the match from completely different perspectives. Germany have already done what they need to do, having qualified for the round of 16 and secured top spot in the group. Ecuador, by contrast, must win to keep their hopes of progressing in the World Cup alive.
Ecuador
The Ecuadorian side go into this final matchday in a tricky situation following their 0–0 draw against Curaçao. It was a very disappointing result for a team that dominated possession, but which once again highlighted the attacking problems it had previously shown. The South American side struggled to create clear-cut chances and only stepped up the pressure as the match entered its closing stages. Key players such as Enner Valencia, Gonzalo Plata and Pervis Estupiñán were far from their best and barely managed to break down a theoretically inferior side. The defeat to Ivory Coast on matchday one and the subsequent draw against Curaçao leave Ecuador in a precarious position. Only a victory against Germany would give them a realistic chance of qualifying.
Germany
Germany have made a strong impression since the start of the tournament. They kicked off with a resounding victory over Curaçao and subsequently beat Ivory Coast 2–1, thereby securing their qualification and top spot in the group. It is true that Julian Nagelsmann’s side struggled far more than expected against the Ivorians. In fact, they were clearly outplayed for much of the first half and needed a superb performance from Deniz Undav to turn the match around. Even so, they once again demonstrated their competitive spirit and the ability to see out difficult matches. With top spot secured and their round of 32 tie already decided, it would not be surprising to see some rotations with the next round in mind.
Our prediction: Draw, with a refund if Germany win (odds 1.83)
I believe the context of the match favours this market. Ecuador absolutely must win and will come out with intensity. Germany have already achieved everything they set out to do in this group stage and may manage their efforts with the knockout rounds in mind. Even so, I find it hard to imagine a German defeat. Ecuador have struggled too much to create danger and convert chances. That’s why I see value in a bet that covers a draw, as the Germans will want to maintain their good form and go into the round of 16 unbeaten. Should Nagelsmann’s side win, the stake would be refunded.
