How Ajax and Shelbourne approach the match

Ajax have made an impressive start under new head coach Míchel. They defeated Vojvodina 4-1 in both legs of the previous round, completing an 8-2 aggregate victory and demonstrating the attacking football their new manager wants to establish. The performance in Amsterdam was not completely straightforward. Ajax conceded from a corner and reached half-time at 1-1, but their superiority became overwhelming after the interval. Oscar Gloukh scored a second-half hat-trick, while Davy Klaassen provided experience and intelligent movement from midfield. Ajax finished with 70 per cent possession and ten shots on target. What stood out to me was their ability to increase the pace once Vojvodina began to tire. They can circulate the ball patiently before suddenly finding Gloukh or one of the wide attackers between the defensive lines. The concern is that Ajax conceded in both matches despite dominating them. Shelbourne may have opportunities if they can win the ball high up the pitch.
Shelbourne form
Shelbourne reached this round by beating Nõmme Kalju 6-4 on aggregate. Their 5-2 first-leg victory at Tolka Park was one of their most productive European performances, with Sean Moore scoring twice and Rodrigo Freitas, Ali Coote and Dan Ring also finding the net. The second leg was much less convincing. Dan Kelly gave Shels the lead in Estonia, and Kalju were subsequently reduced to ten men, but the Irish side lost control after half-time and conceded twice. Russell’s team still progressed, although the defensive lapses were a warning ahead of a much tougher assignment. Shelbourne then lost 1-0 away to Waterford in the Premier Division. They had 65 per cent possession but produced only one effort on target, highlighting the inconsistency that has left them fifth in the domestic table. I like the greater aggression Russell has introduced, particularly without the ball. However, pressing Ajax in Amsterdam requires near-perfect coordination. 2. Gloukh is the main creative danger
Oscar Gloukh scored three times in the home win over Vojvodina and repeatedly found space around the edge of the penalty area. His movement will be difficult for Shelbourne to manage. If a centre-half steps out, Ajax can attack the space behind him. If the defence remains deep, Gloukh has the technique to shoot or play a final pass from central areas.
3. Shelbourne have not kept enough clean sheets
The Reds have failed to record a clean sheet in their last five matches across all competitions. They conceded four goals during the tie against Kalju, including two against ten men in the second leg. Those numbers are especially concerning against an Ajax side that has scored eight times in two competitive matches this season.
4. The first goal could determine the size of Ajax’s advantage
Shelbourne’s best chance of keeping the tie alive is to frustrate Ajax during the opening half-hour. A long period at 0-0 could create impatience inside the stadium and give the visitors greater confidence. An early Ajax goal would produce a completely different contest. The difference lies in how those goals were scored and conceded.
